Making Major Donor Fundraising Really Work for You

Charities are increasingly looking to major donors as a route to growing income or filling funding gaps, but where do you start? This session will set you off on the right track, whatever your size of charity, demystifying this highly profitable income area. Most of us have seen or heard of the theoretical steps of major donor fundraising, but how many of us put them into practice day to day? Having a few major donors is not the same as having a major donor programme. In this session Mike will highlight practical tips that you can take back to work and implement immediately to improve the potential of your major donor portfolio, including flagging new donors, making more of your fundraising/cultivation events and getting senior level buy in to support your efforts.

Insights from 50 major donors

We’ve heard about the 7 steps of major donor fundraising or similar models. Some of us have surveyed regular donors to understand what they think of our cause. There is also academic research on what million-pound donors are looking for from charities. But most major donors fall into a different category, giving between £1,000 - £100,000 a year and to date there is little evidence about what they want and expect from charities they support. Money Tree Fundraising, as part of their work with charities on major donor fundraising, have been conducting interviews with active major donors over the last 18 months - many of these are hospice donors. They now have insights from over 50 major donors about why they give, what prompts them, what makes them give more, how they expect to be communicated with, who should ask and, of course, what irritates them! In this session Mike will pull together themes from these interviews, with some surprising results! Insight drives decision making, which drives results - find out what your top donors really think!
